Old Man of the Mountain

If so, what should it be? Let's hear your thoughts! For news coverage, see: http://www.nytimes.com/aponline/national/AP-Old-Man-Mountain.html

I grew up going to the white mountians with my sisters and brothers, ma and dad would take us for a day trip, and to change it would be upsetting, if there is some way to create the old man's face in the side of the mountian that would be the best I think. Don't go changing the symbol now. To much has changed over the years and some things should stay the same. Franconia notch is a memory to alot of people.
Thanks

I have seen photos of the Old Man of the Mountain Still on the Mountain and Not on the Mountain.

I'm very, very, very sad when I see photos of the Old Man Gone.
-- Paul Miller IV from Wayne,PA on 5/25/05; 5:30:47 PM

I grew up in Auburn, NH and then moved up to a small town called Gilman, VT. so for the past ten years I-95 was my main route of travel, i passed the old man every 5 days.. for years and i always made sure i seen the old man cause it was so amazing, everything about it was beautiful. I had also made it a MUST DO matter every time i traveled. now i take that long boring ride because mother nature made her change and it was very dramatic. The Old Man was an art that may never be replaced by any means... the ones who were lucky enough to see him up close may charish there every photo but never recreate.....
-- Tanisha Sline from Gilaman, VT on 2/22/05; 1:03:27 AM

Thanks for reminding me why I moved to TX. The things I miss about New England are crumbling to the ground. The only thing left are bitter people who have to make every issue turn into a debate of their own agenda; Old Man on the Mountain morphed into attacks on G.W Bush. I think a stone memorial replica at the Profile viewing area. If possible, try to position it so that if viewed from a particular angle it will look like it is still in its original posiition on the mountain. Dignified, Tasteful, Artistic, and it will still bring your tourists.
-- Jennifer from Houston, TX on 12/30/04; 6:52:55 PM

To all of us who loved the 'Old Man',,,It would'nt bother me if we/they just put a simple 'memorial' at Profile Lake area,,just show what 'He' looked like,,and history, pix like they do in other plaques of info,,and call it good,,making sure however that other folks would appreciate, and maybe empathize a little for our loss,,,I was shocked as well,,when I read about it the day it happened,,as well as my family,,we were born, raised mostly in N.H. [lebanon/hanover],and we often went for camping weekends in the 'mtns',and went to the sea,I have so many fond memories of living the great outdoors there,,I miss it yet,,I live in Iowa now,,so,,one could understand the yearning for the 'valley' I think it might be appropriate to put a donation canister[those heavy iron pipes sunk in the ground],to help pay for the memorial, and if any left over,,give back to the people!! I have read over all the comments posted thus far,,lots were humorous,,made sense,,I did not realize all the problems going on 'back there' and now I have to reconsider wanting to move back or buy a retirement property,,pretty disappointing,,no wonder my folks moved us to Maine years back,,I hope the N.H.govt' gets it other 'head' out from its behind soon, and that the people will start speaking out and get some things accomplished!!!GOOD LUCK Granite State,,
-- melinda ellis from shenandoah,iowa on 6/6/03; 11:21:27 AM

wow I'm not from NH but, it seems from reading the posts that you guys have a lot of issues with in your state... (cell phone towers, internet connections, taxes, toll roads, homeless people). Forget about fallin rocks take care of other priorities first LOL!
-- Kristen from on 5/28/03; 2:06:56 AM

I have a question. Why was it named the Old man of the mountain? Does it have anything to do with the masons and their connection to the Old Man of the mountian in India?
-- questioning from student in N.H. on 5/26/03; 3:01:29 PM

I think they should rebuild it out of concrete.
-- Curtis from Wilton on 5/26/03; 11:54:52 AM

I'm a NH native, and was sorry to note the passing of the Old Man. Nature brought him to us, and took him away. For that simple reason alone, I would not support restoration. However, some type of small museum to remember this phenomenon, I believe, would be most appropriate.
-- Peter Nolette from Lebanon on 5/21/03; 4:45:07 PM

I believe, as my father does, that they should build a replica at the bottom to represent him. I believe it is going to be very costly to rebuild the Old Man in its same location. It will not be the orginial Old Man many of us have known for years and years.
-- Marcia Cornell from Enfield on 5/21/03; 2:28:25 PM

Choose between Jackie Robinson and George W. Bu$h, and Crista McAliffe...??? Anyone care to make a prediction?

Why not replace the Old Man with a fiberglass image of Jackie Robinson, the famous Black baseball player who got his start in New Hampshire, as a memorial to all the white New Hampshire citizens who were the first to fight race discrimination long before it became popular with Martin Luther King and his followers?

New Hampshire Baseball Quiz

QUESTION : What New Hampshire minor league team pioneered integration?

ANSWER: 1946 Nashua Dodgers

1946 was a watershed year for organized baseball. In that year, the Brooklyn Dodgers General Manager, Branch Rickey, signed Jackie Robinson to a contract, admitting the first black to white baseball in 75 years. Less known, that same year Rickey signed two others -- Roy Campanella and Don Newcombe -- to join the Dodger family in Nashua.

When a Midwestern league made it clear that blacks were not welcome, Rickey contacted Buzzy Bavasi, then a young general manager with the Nashua Dodgers. Bavasi made it clear that his only interest was in a player's ability.

With support from people throughout Nashua and under the guidance of first year manager Walter Alston, Campanella and Newcombe thrived. "Campy" won the team's Most Valuable Player award, while Newcombe won 14 of 18 decisions. In subsequent years, both men have recalled with pleasure their season in Nashua. By its example, Nashua paved the way for other blacks who would join professional baseball

Let the old man go and look at the greater message that when things in nature are gone or trashed, they are truely gone and can not be replaced.

I will miss the solitude he provided for so many but as life we must move foward. He was always a must visit when I visit and hike the area.

Construct it hollow and put a homeless shelter inside. That way no one can see all the homeless that there are in New Hampshire. They would be out of sight and therefore, out of mind. These NH homeless are not just old male drunks but also lots and lots of young mothers with small children. For shame New Hampshire.
-- Carol Channing Cooper from Orford, on 5/15/03; 1:40:11 PM

I like the idea of constructing a hollow Old Man made out of plastic. But I would put a gambling casino inside which would bring in badly needed revenue. In addition, we could make it a Indian Reservation, ( there must still be a few New Hampshire Native Americans around who could act as tribal elders) and sell cheap cigarettes and tax free gasoline. This would provide many low wage, part time, demeaning, dead end jobs for local residents.

The eyes could be giant windows like in the Statue of liberty which would automatically be lit up at night, and could be seen all up and down the valley. The toll booths on the interstate could provide $2 off coupons for the casino to help offset the toll costs. And of course, there would be a New Hampshire State Liquor Store with the famous signs: "two thousand feet to State Liquor Store", "one thousand feet to State Liquor store", "five hundred feet to State Liquor store", etc. The signs could also be in French and Canadian money could be accepted at par to encourage our northern neighbors to come and spend money.

I wonder if every time Hitler took away another freedom from the German people, if there were German Patriotwacko goose steppers who said: "Germany, love it or leave it", "if you dont like the gas chambers, move to another country", etc. etc. etc.

It never ceases to amaze me how so many poor, uneducated people support the super rich as they steal millions, and millions, and millions, more in so called tax relief, while the poor keep getting more and more and more taxes added to their burdens.

P.T. Barnum was right. "There is a sucker born every minute".

How come these reich wingers are always opposed to freedom of speech?

Perhaps Rush Limburger and Imus in the morning and Colonel North, and Reverend Pat Robertson, support rebuilding the old man, therefore all Reigh Winger Republicans have to support this also?

Oh well, at least the millions spent on rebuilding the Old Man cannot be spent on another foolish war for oil.

What a tragedy!! Though not from New Hampshire, I feel as though I have lost a family member. Growing up in Southern Quebec, my family went camping every summer in the shadow of the Old Man. I still have many pictures and even more great memories. I just learned of this today while surfing the Net. Just a chance hit on a newspaper site from Caledonia. I'm floored.

My heart goes out to all New Hampsherites. Rebuild? I can see the desire. But would it be the same? Change the state emblem? Definitely not! Keep the Old Man alive in your hearts and minds. May God bless you all. The Old Man is gone, but He still makes men in New Hampshire.

What is wrong with people!!! We live in a country of freedom, a place where we are free to travel and live our own lives as we wish. I'm so sick of hearing about the balls on the Ledyard bridge and the cheap remarks about our President. Mr Bush wasn't my first choice but for the problems Mr. Bush has had after taking office, I personally think he's done an outstanding job. Many of us questioned the war but not to support those young men and women who put their lives on the line so we could continue living as we do, is shameful. If you don't like it here...MOVE!!If you don't like the way the Ledyard bridge looks take a different route. I believe I'm correct in saying a politician from a southern State, saw the balls on the Ledyard Bridge and liked it's design so much he took it back to his own State to be used. Be grateful for the life you have, for the country you live in!How many years are we now going to hear about the Old Man...should we rebuild or shouldn't we. You may dislike something but after years can't you let it go?
-- A devoted New Englander from on 5/13/03; 8:33:50 AM

I have been by the Old Man four times and each time he was shrouded in fog and mist and rain so I never did get a picture of him.

Iffin you Yankees do decide to rebuild him, please include a giant wind fan to blow the fog and mist away long enough to get a decent picture. You all could install a push button at the parking site where tourists could press it when they are ready to snap a photo. It is disappointing to drive that far only to see nothing.

Perhaps you could install one of those there Infrared Cameras so we all could see through the fog and mist?

While on vacation last week, I drove the whopping 20 something miles northward through NH on I-95 and paid the toll. The road didn't look any better than the same road in Maine I drove on for free. What a rip off, a dollar to drive 20 miles on a road my tax dollars already paid for. So take your toll and duct tape the rocks back in place.

How about replacing the Old Man with a bust of teacher/astronaut Crista McAuliffe? She was from New Hampshire and George W. Bush is not.

I do like the idea of a hollow plastic or ceramic sculpture hiding internet, and cell phone towers.

As for the Ledyard 'bridge balls', why not carve one in the likeness of Laura Bridgeman, the first blind person to be successfully educated, who was from Hanover. The others could be carved in the likeness of Joseph Smith, Eleasor Wheelock, Dr. Nation Smith, Captain Samuel Morey, Captain Partride, Zerah Colburn, Amos Tuck and other famous and historical, local personages? Europe is filled with old bridges with heads of famous people.

If New Hampshire cant afford small budget items like ambulance services, adult day care and wheelchair vans for seniors, then how can it afford a large budget item like rebuilding the Old Man?

Benson Administration Abandoning Seniors

HHS Commissioner Compares Cuts to Senior Services to „Drowning Puppies‰

Kathy Sullivan, chair of the New Hampshire Democratic Party today called "unbelievable" Health and Human Services Commissioner Nick Vailas‚s comments that it may be necessary to "drown some puppies" and cut services for seniors. Unfortunately, Sullivan said, Vailas‚s comments seem to be representative of Gov. Craig Benson‚s attitudes toward seniors.

"Our seniors are not puppies. We‚re talking about people who fought and won World War II for this country. For Mr. Vailas to essentially suggest endorse a 'thinning of the herd' is unbelievable and outrageous," Sullivan said

In discussing cuts to ambulance services, adult day care and wheelchair vans for seniors, Vailas told New Hampshire Public Radio, "We look at it as 'drowning puppies,' so that the litter can thrive, the department can thrive, other services can thrive. We have to make some very difficult decisions and there are some issues in adult day care, that may be lost."

"Unfortunately, this is what we‚ve seen from the Benson administration since the beginning; Nick Vailas is just dropping the pretense. Running for Governor, Craig Benson made phony promises to not cut services. Now that he is in office, he wants to cut wheelchair vans that seniors need to get to a doctor‚s appointments; make it harder for seniors, people with disabilities and children to get health care; and cut the adult day care services that allow seniors to stay with their families instead of being forced into nursing homes," Sullivan said.

"Even if you don‚t care about the human cost, these decisions don‚t make financial sense for the taxpayers of New Hampshire; the cost of nursing home care is at least twice the cost of adult day care," Sullivan said.

The Benson Administration has amassed a horrible record on seniors' issues in just a few months, with Commissioner Vailas' comments only the latest example.

I dont know much about electronics but I would think they could rebuild the Old Man in Plexiglas or some other kind of plastic, and make him hollow inside and put cell phone towers and microwave relay links inside, and high speed internet access antennas. New Hampshires cell phone coverage needs to be vastly improved, and I cant believe that all New Hampshire has is outdated 28.8 and 56.6 internet modems.

I don't think NM is the cheapest state in which to live if you take all taxes into consideration. We have an, I *think,* 4 3/4¨ales tax on groceries, 5¢ncome tax, and other hidden taxes. Our legislature never saw a tax it didn't like. On the other hand, our property tax rate is fairly reasonable. Even in Albuquerque and Santa Fe, a $150K home is barely over $1000 a year in taxes.

We live in a rural area, thus the low property tax, and have the advantage of living barely 35 miles from the Jicarilla Apache Indian Reservation, where there is no State tax on groceries and no State or Federal tax on gasoline, so we make out pretty well. Gasoline is $1.19 a gallon there and cigarettes are $21 a carton for Marlboro. If you buy an Indian brand such as Native, they're $10 a carton since you pay no Federal tax, either.

Please note that the official NH state seal and the official NH state flag is a old fashioned sailing ship with the sunrise behind it, not the Old Man of the Mountains! The Old Man wasn't even considered during the colonial era. It was only during the first part of the 20th century when the super rich grand hotels became popular, that the Old Man became popular also. He was just a advertising gimmick for the super rich hotel owners and he had nothing to do with the Revolution and New Hampshires fight for freedom.

So lets not get carried away with patriotwackoism for something that never was linked to freedom, liberty, justice and "live free and die", and America, love it or leave it.

The Old Man died just as the golden age of the grand hotels died. So lets not get emotional or the politicians will spend millions of hard earned taxpayer dollars on more foolishness.

How about the state busting up all those rocks that came down and selling them as souveniers? Own a piece of the Rock. Put the money back into the general fund to help offset the growing loss of revenue New Hampshire now has do to NAFTA and the Canadian truckers taking all our jobs away from us.

I don't think we should come up with a new state symbol. The Old Man of the Mountain should be remembered as part of the New Hampshire heritage. To change the symbol would almost be forgetting his exsistance.
It's possible that he just didn't like seeing what was happening in the world, so this was his way of letting us know.
-- Aaron Franklin from Plainfield, NH on 5/11/03; 11:37:01 AM

The Old Man of the Mountain profile must be replaced with a replica as it originally was.

It is the heart of the state of NH. The profile should always there for the future to see. The story can be told of its existance - the rock slide - and the replica symbolizing the love and respect we all have for this beautiful stone face and its symbol of strength of the people of NH.

Let it continue to be the symbol of our motto: "LIVE FREE OR DIE". Let the stone face "live free" forever.

Gotta comment on the taxes. I live in New Mexico. My wife is from New England. A couple of years ago, while back visiting, we considered moving to New England. I'm a native Vermonter but have lived in NM for over 45 yrs.

We considered New Hampshire since it's closer to her elderly parents who live in Maine. We looked at homes and found several that were quite attractive and in good areas (meaning good deer and small game hunting, which was my prerequisite). They were good until I was told the property tax rate.

We live in Northern New Mexico. Our home is valued at slightly more than 100K. A home in NH equal to ours would be in the 150K range. I pay $174 a year property tax. I don't think that tax rate is an option anywhere in NE, certainly not in New Hampshire.

As a result, we've decided to A. Stay where we are or, B. Look for a home in Maine. I would prefer Vermont but that's not an option at this point. I wonder how folks in our income bracket, 32K a year, can afford to live in New Hampshire.
-- Chuck from Los Ojos NM on 5/11/03; 12:49:37 AM

By all means rebuild the Great Stone Face if at
all possible. A restoration is not a fraud or
deception if all know that this is what it is.
This restoration would be a tribute to nature and
an opportunity for future viewers to see the
majesty of what was once a natural sculpture.

The old man was in danger of collapse for most of the last century and was held together by annual treatments involving steel rods, rope and
epoxy glue.
-- Joyelle Baker from Tilton on 5/10/03; 10:51:55 PM

How about replacing the Old Man with a big sculpture of George Dubya, the hero of Baghdad? The Bu$h family is very rich and would pay for the whole thing, so it wouldnt cost the New Hampshire taxpayers anything. And "W" would see to it that NH got lots of free publicity and news coverage.

If the artist chosen plays his cards right, he could squeeze in Cheney and Ashcroft on either side, and construct a Second Gulf War Memorial at the base with the names of the honored dead, a sort of two for one deal. And in addition, it could be seen all up and down the valley so tourists wouldnt have to be limited to that tiny parking area on the northbound side which was always full and overcrowded.

Probably the state could charge for parking and admission also, thus bringing in more revenue and creating more jobs.
-- K. K. K. from Hanover on 5/10/03; 6:38:03 PM

I agree with several postings, "God Giveth, God Taketh"...don't rebuild an Act of God but find a way to have a memorial at Profile Lake. A monument or sculpture of the "Old Man" would be the most respectful. It seems New Hampshire along with many other states across our country are in budget crunches and cannot afford to waste big money on rebuilding nature when we should focus on our future with jobs and education!! I will miss the Old Man, I was fortunate enough to come visit him just last August. Your state still has so much beauty to offer don't lose sight of that!

Old Man of the Mountains and the Freedom to Read Protection Act.

Few who voted for the Patriot Act knew that among its provisions was one that gave FBI agents the authority to engage in fishing expeditions to see what Americans read. Although it does not mention bookstores or libraries specifically, the sweeping legislation gives the FBI the power to seize all of the circulation, purchasing and other records of library users and bookstore customers on no stronger a claim than an FBI official's statement that they are part of a terrorism investigation. Surely the powers the government needs to fight terrorism can be subject to more meaningful checks and balances than that, especially when the right to read without government intrusion is at stake.

The Patriot Act expanded the FBI's authority in two ways. First, it gave the FBI the authority to seize any records of any entity. Most members of Congress probably didn't realize it, but this included libraries and bookstores. Second, Congress dropped the prior requirement that the FBI actually have some evidence that the person whose records it sought was a member of a terrorist group or otherwise involved in terrorism.

Now, one Patriot Act provision allows the FBI to obtain whole databases, including records of citizens not suspected of any wrongdoing.

Such is the state of affairs that librarians in California and across the country are putting up signs warning patrons that the FBI may be snooping among their records. These librarians, along with booksellers, are particularly concerned because the proceeding for these warrants takes place in a closed court and the new law has a built-in gag order: Those who are asked to turn over records are not allowed to say that the search has occurred or that records were given to the government. In addition, under this provision the courts are no longer an arbiter of individual rights because judges are not allowed to determine whether there is probable cause to justify such sweeping searches.

To remedy the excesses of the Patriot Act that threaten our right to read, Bernie Sanders, (I) VT, has introduced the Freedom to Read Protection Act.

What do I tell my students about post-old man life in New Hampshire and the USA? Should I "live free or die" or should I remain silent and go with the flow?

"When beggars die, there are no comets seen. The heavens themselves blaze forth the death of princes."

William Shakespeare's famous words in his classic play "Julius Caesar"

Thus, dramatic omens and extraordinary acts of fate ˜ both wonderful and horrendous ˜ are supposed to foreshadow dramatic changes in the human order of things as well.

Remember, The White Mountains was once the sacred ground of the Sachems, or the local native american medicine men.

I cant help but think that the sudden disappearance of the Old Man of the Mountains is a unfavorable omen.

Remember, New Hampshire is the first primary election state for the 2004 elections.

Or was it simply that the Old Man chose to slide into history rather than stay up there and watch his once great nation suspend the bill of rights, and the constitution, and replace it with the Patriot Act where citizens can be arrested in the middle of the night, dragged to unknown locations, and held indefinitely without benefit of Lawyer, Jury or speedy trial?

Perhaps watching America carry out its first unprovoked attack against a helpless, weak nation against the will of the Pope, the UN, and the whole world, was to much for him. He preferred to go down in the middle of the night in a thick fog so that we could not see the tears in his eyes, rather than stay up there and pretend that all is well with freedom, and libery and justice, and all those precious values he watched come into fruition during his watch, and then slip quicky away just as he slipped quickly away.

When I was a Dartmouth student in 1955, President Eisenhower came to New Hampshire to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the discovery of the Old Man. It was all set up for Ike and the Governor to give a ceremony at profile lake. The day before a group of us Outing Club and Frat guys got snookered, climbed the Old Man, dragged up several pine trees and hooked them onto the chin and gave the old man a set of whiskers. Of course the State of New Hampshire had no one to climb up and take them down. Ike came, gave his speech, and left never knowing that the Old Man didnt really look that way. Later on that week the State Police came up and persuaded some of us to climb back up and take the whiskers off.

I wonder if a picture still exists of the Old Man with a set of Dartmouth Whiskers?

May I respectfully suggest that the old man of the mountains site be rebuilt with a giant FINGER pointing skywards, thus giving the NH taxpayer the finger?

New Hampshire Taxes Hit Poor & MiddleClass Far Harder than the Wealthy

Low- and middle-income families in New Hampshire pay a far higher share of their income
in state and local taxes than do the richest New Hampshire families, according to a new study
by the Institute on Taxation & Economic Policy.

Unfortunately, when it comes to paying for services, New Hampshire has a very unfair tax system.

The state and local tax rate on the best off one percent of New Hampshire families-with average incomes of over $1 million-is 2.4 percent before accounting for the tax savingsfrom federal itemized deductions. After the federal offset, the effective tax rate is amere 1.9 percent.

The average tax rate on families in the middle of the income distribution-those earning
between $34,000 and $55,000-is 5.8 percent. After the federal offset, the rate is 5.4 percent, more than twice the effective rate the richest pay.

But the tax rate on the poorest New Hampshire families-those earning less than $20,000-is the highest of all. At 8.1 percent it is over four times the effective rate of the wealthiest New Hampshire taxpayers.

The study found that New Hampshire's taxes are particularly regressive because the state lacks a broad based income tax and instead relies primarily on regressive property taxes to fund public services.

I heard about the Old Man of the Mountain years ago and finally saw him, for the first and only time, a couple of years ago while in New England visiting friends.

I don't think rebuilding the face is the answer. The money can be better used elsewhere. The collapse made national news and tourists would know the rebuilt Old Man to be a fraud. I'm sure your Governor's plan to try to rebuild the face is a result of perceived lost tourism and tourist dollars.

I agree with the last two posters. We are retired and my husband lost his pension after 27 years working in New Hampshire because NH is a 'right to work' state which does not protect workers pensions. We simply cannot afford the Dresden School District $5.4 million athletic field proposal, and the $37.1 million middle school on Lyme Road. My husband and I now have to travel to Canada to get cheaper prescription drugs and cheaper dental care.

What is all this New Hampshire Republican nonsense about spending millions to rebuild Old Man of the Mountains?

If you want to remember old man of the mountains simply get one of the new 2000 quarters which has George Washington on the front and old man of the mountains on the back and carry it around with you. It will only cost you a quarter and cost us nothing. Thanks.

There is still "the Old Lady of the Mountain" known as "the watcher" who is directly across from where the old man was. That is why she is called "the watcher" because she watches the old man. You have to climb up a trail to the east of the highway in order to see her, she can not be seen from the road.

There is also an american indian head in those rocks but this is on private property. Isnt it ironic that both the American Indian and the Woman outlasted the old white male symbol that looked like President Jefferson?

Now that the old man is gone, can we please widen Interstate 93 to a four lane, divided, highway and bring it up to federal safety standards? The only reason this was not done was because they were afraid that all the blasting and construction would cause the old man to come down.

Does anyone know how much of the taxpayers money was spent over the years on trying to preserve this archaic symbol of white male suppremecy?
-- MS Anonymous from Hanover on 5/9/03; 7:22:29 AM

I was deeply saddened by the loss of The Old Man of the Mountain. I have visited it at least three or four times every year. There is no replacing our state symbol. It was a natural rock formation and no replica of it could possibly replace it. I think a nice memorial at Profile Lake at the base of the mountain would serve as a reminder. Profile Lake is where I would often go to view The Old Man, take some time out and reflect on New Hampshire's beauty.

The Old Man of the Mountains was created by nature and taken away by nature. He served the
state for a very long time. Let him rest in peace. No man-made restoration would ever be the
same. Create a bust or a likeness of somekind to
place in the visitor's area at Profile Lake, but
don't try to climb up and change the force of
nature. You would be doing the Old Man a great
injustice at the very least. Let him be remembered as he was.

We have a huge opportunity here...and one that would be fast and inexpensive...which is the NH way.
The outline of the Great Stone Face should be sandblasted into the sides of the Ledyard Bridge Balls.
Doing so would serve two purposes: It would give the Old Man a high-profile (sorry) memorial; it would also right an egregious wrong by restoring harmony to the tormented souls of the people in Hanover and Norwich who now wretch every time they drive over the bridge.
And...come to think of it...it could also be construed as New Hampshire's way of marking its turf -- the Connecticut River.

I almost died when I read that Gov. Benson's initial response to the natural landslide was a statement in which he said he would look into ways of replacing the old man! Hey, environmentalists this was nature taking its course--the formation was not man-made and its demise was not even viewed by man ( to our knowledge )--let it go! With so many school budgets failing on both sides of the river, with articles deploring the lack of dental and health coverage for many of our fellow citizens and many other financial ills too numerous to mention, it should not even be a consideration to replace this pile of rocks! Especially if governmentally funded--a $25,000 job ( or whatever the real cost would be ) would definitely balloon with governmental oversight!
-- Science Teacher from Thetford on 5/7/03; 12:34:18 PM

I think that the Old Man should be left alone - to return to nature. He was created by natural forces and those same forces took the formation away. There should never be an attempt to replicate. Perhaps a formation of natural mountain stones ( not those from the fall) could be used to construct a cairn-type memorial with a bronze placque embeded thereon with an inscribed profile and the date of the slide. This could be done in the parking lot at Cannon Mountain/Profile Lake where the Old Man was viewed for all the years by so many, many people.

I think it would be great to be able to rebuild a replica but it certainly wouldn't have the same meaning since we had a more than unique formation within our state and I am sure we all didn't even realize it. We seem to take so many things for granted until they are no longer there. But I also am sure there are many more things that need to be taken care of than putting rocks back on a side hill........

I think it is sad though that people use these events to make money and be dishonest. I heard on the radio today that pieces of the rock have already started showing up on e-bay.

Sad world we live in.

I think we should make an original sized model out of plastic that would be a replica and be placed on several rocky crags. It would have the robotic ability to answer questions posed by the tourists that visit. It could also crash down the slope on cue so everyone could appreciate it this time. Then, like a puppet, wires would reassemble it again. We could make the entire state of New Hampshire into a Disney-like world where people would bring their children to experience what is real, but undercontrol. No unexpected landslides.

I think the broken pieces of the Old Man of the Mountain should be gathered and piled up to make a cairn as a memorial.
An inscription could be placed on it which could also serve as a new state motto, "New Hampshire: Showing the way toward crumbling Republican fiscal policies."
